The drainage ditch behind the house has been overgrowing with Himalayan blackberries for a while. These blackberries are thorny and an invasive, not a native plant. Last summer, we managed to keep them at bay, but since we are putting up a fence, we thought it was a good time for a pre-emptive strike, so we don’t have them climbing through and around the fence by April.
It took mom and I three hours doing battle with blackberries, branches and such to clear them far enough away from the fence line that we won’t have to worry until next winter. We’ve lived here for 20 years, so why the big rush to put in a fence? One of my dang chickens keeps laying her eggs in more and more inaccessible places (and getting her sisters to add to her horde!) because she wants babies. She has no bloody clue that she hasn’t got a boyfriend so she can sit and sit and nothing is gonna come out of those eggs!
We still need to cut back some of the trees that are crowding over the fence line and garden beds before we can put in the fence. Then, chipping all of this down for the compost will be the order of the day!
